Sanlorenzo SL86A is proof that even the most traditional design elements can be revolutionized through the innovative application of asymmetry
The Sanlorenzo SL86 Asymmetric, which made its debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, represents a fascinating evolution of the previous classic 86-foot model, redefining yacht design standards. Developed in collaboration with Studio Zuccon International Project, which conceived the exterior lines and interior of the first unit, this vessel uniquely blends tradition and innovation.
The SL86A leverages the principles of asymmetry to enhance the functionality of both interior and exterior spaces, achieving improved usability and an intensified connection with the marine environment, while preserving the characteristic elegance and style that define Sanlorenzo.
PERFECT BLEND OF FORM AND FUNCTION
The asymmetrical design of the Sanlorenzo SL86A maximizes both internal and external space, delivering a yacht that is both more functional and visually striking. By eliminating one of the two side walkways, the yacht gains valuable space, allowing for a more spacious and practical interior. The starboard walkway remains open, while the port side expands, increasing the volume of the main deck.
However, the true innovation of the yacht lies in the stern configuration, where no visible stairs are present. This minimalistic design reflects Sanlorenzo’s asymmetrical revolution: Hiding the stairs enhances the harmony of the stern layout and introduces a transparency element that ensures a full connection between those in the cockpit and those swimming at the stern, making the most of the space. The carefully designed layout reveals a staircase that becomes visible by rotating and, through the opening of the hatch, reveals a spacious garage capable of housing a tender and a jet ski. Moreover, the entire hatch can lower into the water for ease of launching the tender and jet ski, simultaneously transforming into a swimming platform for guests.
Another successful innovation is the reimagined use of vertical connections, minimizing their footprint. The removal of the staircase linking the cockpit to the flybridge increases the available space in the cockpit itself and “gives” an important additional volume to the living area. This choice has improved passage ergonomics and expanded the visual perception inside the yacht. Combined with transparency, this solution creates much more visual space and more efficient spatial volumes.
Thanks to relocating the staircase to a more central part of the deck, the main deck features a spacious aft living area connected via the port-side passage to a unique forward dining area that can be customized to serve as a cinema room or playroom. This forward dining area, directly connected to the kitchen for service, is an additional onboard living space that no other yacht of a similar size can boast. Overall, this layout minimizes visual barriers and highlights the large windows that create a privileged connection with the sea from stern to bow.The lower deck includes four cabins, with the owner’s cabin centrally located for optimal comfort and privacy.
Externally, the SL86A offers ample outdoor space for relaxation and enjoyment. Two large sunbathing areas, one on the bow and the other integrated into the superstructure, provide plenty of room to soak up the sun. The flybridge, with its expanded space due to the removal of the traditional staircase area, offers even more customization options.
DESIGN MASTERS AND ENVIRONMENTAL VISIONARIES
The SL86A exemplifies Sanlorenzo’s commitment to elegance and style. Its interior uses natural materials such as untreated wood, marble, stone, and natural fabrics like linen, jute, hemp, and silk. This combination enhances the yacht’s transparency and lightness, reinforcing the connection with the sea.
Sustainability is a key focus, with the yacht incorporating recycled and recyclable materials and a detailed hydrodynamic study of the hull to optimize resistance, consumption, and range.
Equipped with the latest technological advancements, the SL86A delivers exceptional performance and comfort. Powered by twin MAN 12V engines (2,000hp), the yacht can reach speeds of up to 29 knots, ensuring a thrilling and dynamic sailing experience. The advanced hull design and state-of-the-art stabilization systems provide a smooth and stable ride, even in challenging conditions.
SANLORENZO’S ASYMMETRICAL REVOLUTION
Sanlorenzo introduced a revolutionary concept to the yacht industry in 2015: asymmetrical design. By breaking away from the traditional bilateral symmetry, this innovative approach allowed for more efficient use of onboard space and created a stronger connection to the sea.
This groundbreaking project was the result of a long-standing collaboration between top designers with diverse experiences and perspectives. From the initial idea by renowned automotive designer Chris Bangle to the realization of the exterior lines by Bernardo Zuccon, Sanlorenzo was able to bring even the most complex designs to life.
The first asymmetrical yacht, SL102A, debuted in 2018, setting a new benchmark in the yachting industry. Building on this success, Sanlorenzo has since produced several other asymmetrical models, including SL90A, SL96A, SL106A, and SL120A. Today, the SL86A represents the entry-level model in this revolutionary lineup, skillfully applying the asymmetry concept to offer an optimal and distinctive design. With its streamlined and elegant exterior, this model stands out for its innovative solutions and perfect balance of form and function.
