Today, June 25th, the world marks the International Day of the Seafarer – a day dedicated to all those who tirelessly work at sea, making it possible for global trade and the economy to function without interruption.
Seafarers are an essential and unbreakable link in the global supply and development chain, and their efforts and sacrifices too often remain invisible to the wider public.
This year, the campaign “My Harassment-Free Ship” has been launched – a bold initiative that promotes a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea. Its goal is to create a safe, dignified, and inclusive working environment for all seafarers around the world.

The Reality: Understanding the Challenges
Harassment affects seafarers of all genders and ranks, leading to emotional trauma and disrupted careers.
– Many incidents go unreported due to fear of retaliation and lack of trust in reporting mechanisms.
– Stronger legislation, leadership training, and global cooperation are needed to drive real change.

Creating Safer Workplaces
Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, yet many still face violence, harassment, and discrimination at sea. More than 50% of maritime professionals have reported experiencing some form of harassment, putting their safety, mental health, and career progression at risk.
The maritime industry must take decisive action to ensure safe, respectful, and inclusive working environments.
