If you are a fan of picturesque landscapes and enjoy hiking and views of the grassy plateaus and steep cliffs that make you shudder, then this is the right time to pack your bags and visit the far north of Europe
The fascinating archipelago of 18 rocky volcanic islands, located between Iceland and Norway, is not just a place where you might take the most beautiful photos admiring the dramatic landscapes of the wild north. In this unique European corner you will have the opportunity to swim in the icy ocean, fish with local fishermen, cruise gorges between 700 m high cliffs, but also travel through tunnels under the sea which, in addition to embankments, bridges and waterways, connect this unique group of islands.
THE CAPITAL
The capital Torshavn, although with less than 20,000 inhabitants, offers everything you need from a metropolis. Numerous restaurants, hotels, clubs, theaters and galleries will make your stay complete. The name of the city means “Thor’s harbour” and is associated with one of the main Nordic deities – the god of lightning, thunder and hearth. However, Torshavn, located on the largest and most populated island of Streymoy, with its winding and colorful houses, is actually much more tame than the name may indicate. Many houses in the city and on the islands are lovely and nicely covered with grass roofs, and the locals are like the nature that surrounds them – hardworking and diligent, proud of their tradition and life that is neither easy, monotonous nor urban. Their steps are brisk, their hands are dry from salty water, and their thoughts are as wide as pastures for flocks of sheep or “Faroe treasure”, as they are called. Tourist potential of the islands is immeasurable. Their remoteness, authenticity and preserved nature attract an increasing number of travelers and nature enthusiasts, and it is estimated that in the near future this may become one of the most popular destinations in Europe.
HIKING TOURS
If you are wondering which season is the best to explore the Faroe Islands, we can say – now! The climate is milder than in our country, so the temperature in winter rarely goes below zero, while in summer it reaches mainly a pleasant twenty degrees. All you need is a full backpack, good hiking legs and a desire for adventure. Beautiful green and hilly landscapes without a single tree, with grass that changes color several times during the day in summer, are a strong motive to attract many painters who spend time here in order to find inspiration for their works of art. If, however, you find yourself hesitating because people tell you “winter is coming” – don’t worry, the island covered with snow looks even more magical, and from September to March the sky has perfect conditions for observing the northern lights and Aurora Borealis.
ISLAND CUISINE
The Faroe Islands translate as Sheep Islands, which is not surprising considering that sheep make up a huge population here. Popular is a mutton specialty, and the real delicacy is dried meat that the locals dry only in the wind, they don’t even salt it, so due to the specific taste, this is a real gourmet challenge. However, if your preference lies with fish or seafood, get ready to enjoy the culinary skills of a nation that is, above all, facing the sea and for whom fishing is an inseparable part of the tradition. We recommend that you definitely try the local fish Toskur, in combination with apple and sour cream and indulge in the pleasure of this perfect combination of flavors. Do you think that with the national liqueur Rusan, fish on a plate and stories intervined with legends, you need something more? Simply extend your vacation!
