All Swimming Roads Lead to Stari Grad on Hvar

From May 27, 2025, this magical Dalmatian town will host the 21st edition of the European Open Water Swimming Championships. Key questions arise: can Hungary’s youth overpower Italy’s experience? Will Germany continue its dominance in the women’s division?

The charm of Stari Grad Bay, combined with the community’s dedication and a new level of organization, promises an unforgettable sporting spectacle at the 21st edition of the European Open Water Swimming Championships.

The schedule includes classic 5 km and 10 km races, and introduces an exciting new format – a 3 km knockout sprint race that made its debut in the World Cup. The championship comes just ahead of the World Championships in Singapore, adding extra intensity.

This event holds special meaning for Croatia – the first edition was held in Stari Grad back in 1989. The 2025 championship marks the eighth time it’s held as a standalone competition.

Italy enters as the favorite. In Belgrade 2024, they won three golds, three silvers, and two bronzes. Olympic and world champion Gregorio Paltrinieri remains their key figure. Their main rivals: Hungary, France, and Germany.

Hungarians David Betlehem and Kristóf Rasovszky are a formidable duo, while Germany’s Leonie Beck dominated the women’s races last year with golds in both 5 km and 10 km. Despite a brief media stint, Germany still has a deep talent pool.

In Rome 2022, Italy swept the men’s and team events and claimed four women’s medals. That was also when legend Sharon van Rouwendaal won her last European gold. Watch for Lea Boy, the 2021 Budapest champion, as a strong contender.
