In 2009, the Italian luxury design company Pier Paolo Lazzarini announced its most ambitious project to date – Pangeos, a floating city shaped like a giant turtle, designed to accommodate up to 60,000 people. This itinerant floating city will feature various hotels, shopping centers, parks, ship and aircraft ports, and all other facilities needed to support its vast population. The project takes its name from Pangea, the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras.
This impressive structure, twice the size of the Roman Colosseum, will span 550 meters (1,800 feet) in length and 610 meters (2,000 feet) wide from wing to wing. Each wing will house 19 villas and 64 apartments, offering an unprecedented level of luxury on the water.
Pangeos was conceived with the goal of becoming not only a technological marvel but also a fully sustainable floating community. Powered by nine electric motors with 16,800 horsepower, this “city on the water” will be built from an unsinkable steel structure, ensuring its resilience against any challenges. In addition to luxurious cabins, entertainment zones, and even a rooftop garden, Pangeos offers a fully self-sufficient living experience on water, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in nautical engineering.
Still under construction, Pangeos is expected to break many records and become the largest floating structure ever built, raising the bar for luxury and sustainability in the yacht industry.
